As we all know, the perfect bra fulfills a trifecta of comfort and style: lasting comfort, a gorgeous visual appearance, and (of course) the perfect fit. However, achieving these qualities is easier said than done. Women’s Wear Daily estimates that a shocking 64% of women tend to wear the wrong bra size, a statistic that throws a majority of lingerie drawers into question. To find yourself in the happy minority (and to reduce the number of women wearing the wrong bra size by at least one), read our essential guide to discovering your real bra size, and to leveraging this information toward the best bras you’ve ever owned.
While you can always ask a friend for help, it’s definitely possible for you to accurately measure yourself in the comfort of your own home with a simple measuring tape. For the best results, take your time, stand up straight, breathe normally, and take notes as you measure.
1. Measure your band size. This crucial step is where the majority of women make mistakes when determining their actual bra size. To get the right band size, fit the measuring tape or ribbon snugly beneath the bust, and make sure that it’s even all the way around the torso with no gaps. Once you’ve got your measurement (in inches), round it to the nearest whole number, then add on five inches for odd numbers or four inches for even numbers. This total number is your band size.
2. Measure your bust. To get the best measurement here, make sure that the measuring tape is even, and that it fits comfortably around the bust without pulling inward or stretching too tightly. Again, this measurement should be rounded to the nearest inch.
3. Measure your cup size. This is a simple calculation of your bust size minus your band size. Simply subtract the band size number from the bust size number, then identify the correlating letter. 0 is AA, 1 is A, 2 is B, 3 is C, 4 is D, 5 is DD, 6 is DDD, and so on.
4. Determine your real bra size. Your band size is the number in the bra size (e.g, 32, 34, 36, etc.) and the difference between your bust size and band size is the letter (e.g., A, B, C, etc.).
Once you’ve got your accurate bra size locked down, the perfect bra fit can make online shopping every bit as successful as in-store shopping (not to mention a lot more relaxing). We recommend using a trusted size guide, designed to help you find the right fit every time.
